Laboratories and blood banks have essential tasks to be carried out in disaster situations, and they must be integrated into the contingency plans of the health sector. PAHO/WHO has prepared this technical training material as a resource to facilitate preparedness and strengthen of these facilities in disaster situations. The purpose is to sensitize and guide health authorities, laboratory directors, laboratory technicians and blood banks in identifiying responsibilities and functions of these services in disaster situations, taking into account priorities, needs and the local capacity for immediate response.

Contingency plans should incorporate activities to promote mitigation, vulnerability reduction, and the rehabilitation and reorganization of services to allow health services to better respond in disaster situations.

  • A PowerPoint presentation for training purposes, which can be used in seminars and courses.
