Humanitarian Supply Management System

National SUMA Teams

An intense program of training and specialized activities has taken place in during the second phase (1997-2001). In several countries of the Region, like El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Venezuela they have planned and completed courses. These courses were noteworthy because they used the countries' own human resources as instructors and their own training materials such as computers, manuals, and audiovisual equipment. The managers of the SUMA project always have promoted the formation of trainers at national level in the countries and the setting up of SUMA teams in each country to strengthen the national capacity, by increasing the self-sufficiency in the management of humanitarian assistance during an emergency. The countries in the Region have shown a high degree of preparation and interest on the part of the emergency and disaster management institutions. Currently, more than 3000 individuals have participated in SUMA courses in Latin America and the Caribbean.
